DIONTE' McCLENDON

EDUpreneur, UNLearning YOUth

As a college student Dionte’ learned the value of internships. In 2014, he interned with Center of Student Missions in Chicago, IL educating youth groups about disparities and inequities throughout urban cities; in 2015 he interned in upstate New York at Ramapo for Children as a bunk leader engaging teenagers with autism and behavioral/emotional needs.

Dionte's first city program to oversee was AustinCorps, a partnership government class with Aldine ISD Career and Technical Education educating high school seniors about the operations of City of Austin departments before becoming interns working throughout the city. For three summers (2018-2021) Dionte’ provided leadership to The City of Austin’s Get Ready! STEAM-focused (Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts and Math) summer internship program employing over 80 students each summer. His responsibilities included recruiting and interviewing students, hiring and placing interns at work sites across the city, support intern supervisors, coordinate activities and field trips and ensure students are growing within their respective workplaces. As the pandemic caused internships to pivot virtually Dionte and his team of coworkers collaboratively developed a virtual internship program for students to work at-home while also sharpening their professionalism and skills sets.

Through both personal and professional internship experiences Dionte’ realized that Black and Brown students were the minority in participating in wonderful internship opportunities. As a result Dionte’ remains committed to addressing the barriers and inequities students of color face hindering their participation. Furthermore, UNLearning provides support to high school and college students by providing tools to be an exceptional intern/employee from interviewing to maximizing their internship experience.
